Increasing profitability through cooperation between business, research and government
The targets of the eTampere programme reflect the times in which they were set. Essential changes have taken place in the operating environment since the year 2000. A larger than anticipated proportion of the programme’s results have been realized as better resources for coping and regenerating in the face of change rather than a major expansion of activity and an increase in job numbers.
In addition to reaching quantitative targets, the programme aimed to develop a novel operating culture. Profitability isn’t improved by ICT alone; services and activities that utilize ICT must also be developed. The fact that the eTampere projects have brought together players from government, research and the business world and that there have been three perspectives – economy, technology and society – has expanded the players’ understanding of the significance of networking and cooperation for profitable operation.
eTampere has generated cooperation and forms of cooperation that wouldn’t otherwise have emerged, and accelerated internationalization and the emergence of a new, intensive cooperation culture.
From the profitability perspective, the current stage of business electrification is good and provides an excellent platform for testing innovative, profitability-enhancing applications and developing new business. However, the current structures and culture for generating unprejudiced applications and new business are still somewhat inflexible. There is neither the ability nor always the will to utilize entrepreneurship as a resource in development projects by larger companies and government. Much remains to be done. The main challenge is how to bring practical application to the same level as the faith held in technology; to bring in the marketing man to accompany the inventor.
Here you can find examples of how cooperation was implemented in practice.
