A good operating environment for knowledge-intensive business

For the business world, eTampere promised research that would promote e-business expertise, functional practices for transferring research knowledge into product development, products and services, and training. The concrete targets were to generate 20 new, internationally competitive e-economy companies, acquire new risk capital for the region’s companies and forward the emergence of jobs in the field of ICT.

Much research has been conducted and good practices created. The programme didn’t accomplish its aims in regard to the creation of new companies and jobs as economic trends changed significantly immediately after the programme was launched. However, in terms of employment in the ICT sector, Tampere has been successful in creating new jobs whereas unemployment has risen in Helsinki, Turku and Oulu, for example.

The programme has proven that the electrification of business is not a separate issue but part of normal modernization through the adoption of new technologies. The electrification of business breaks down barriers between companies, researchers and funders of research.
