COGAIN – Communication by Gaze Interaction
Communication by Gaze Interaction (COGAIN) is an EU-funded network of excellence, contributed to by the eTampere Technology engine programmes and coordinated by the Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction (TAUCHI) at the University of Tampere Department of Computer Sciences. The project brings together 22 top units from ten European countries and Japan.
COGAIN strives to improve the quality of life for those with speech or motoric impairment and the severely disabled by offering a possibility to communicate by gaze.
Within the network, gaze typing, entertainment and environment control applications based on eye-tracking are developed. Eye-typing applications are primarily tools that enable communication. Entertainment and environment control applications introduce equality to the lives of the disabled by enabling experiences similar to those of the non-disabled in addition to an increased level of independence.
COGAIN also strives to have an impact on the compatibility and pricing of gaze-tracking equipment and applications so that increasingly many people would have an opportunity to acquire the necessary equipment and applications for their own use. The project is to continue until August 2009.
