Research knowledge doesn’t flow unaided to benefit product development
eTampere was a research-oriented programme. More than 400 research projects were implemented during its course. The programme was criticized for excessive research orientation and voices called for action of a more concrete nature. Research is not a problem in itself, however. On the contrary, there should be even more. The problem lies in what is being researched and how the acquired knowledge is best brought to the benefit of companies and public players. eTampere raised various parties’ level of understanding concerning cooperation between research, companies and government, but there are still many challenges and lessons to learn for all concerned. It is also difficult to directly demonstrate the benefits of research – the benefit of many of eTampere’s research projects will also be evident only in the long term.
eTampere’s research knowledge is available to everyone. But it doesn’t necessarily flow to product development by itself. Companies need to be active.
Examples of such activity include one of eTampere’s top international projects COGAIN, the eBRF conference, which brings researchers and companies closer to each other, and the Information Society Observatory project which specialized in knowledge society foresight.
