eTampere steps into future

In the spring of 2000, there was much discussion in Tampere about taking
the next step in order to reach the top of the Information Society, with
regard to research, development and application. This is how preparation
for the eTampere programme began.

The programme plan presents the outcome of the preparation work carried out in the summer and autumn of 2000, that is, the entire eTampere program. The programme was made for the years 2001 to 2005 and its estimated cost is 130 million euros.

The plan includes a compact description of each module and the
objectives, organisation, schedule and estimated cost for the entire programme as of December 2000.

The members of the team responsible for planning the program
were:
• Professor Hannu Eskola, Tampere University of Technology
• Director, Docent Antti Kasvio, University of Tampere
• Director Juha Kostiainen, City of Tampere Business Development
• Managing Director Olli Niemi, Tampere Technology Centre Ltd
• Managing Director Klaus Oesch, PCA Infocom Oy
• Professor Pauli Kuosmanen, Tampere University of Technology
• Managing Director Reijo Paajanen, Prinnox Oy
• Director Jouko Suokas, VTT Automation
• Professor Jarmo Viteli, University of Tampere

In addition to the persons mentioned above, a large number of people
participated in the preparation of the modules. As part of the preparation
work, almost 50 key company representatives, the city of Tampere,
various ministries and fi nanciers were interviewed between May and August in 2000.

"Citizens in the Tampere area will be the first to participate and
benefit from the eTampere programme, and, in the long run, their
role will prove to be the most significant. Where eEurope builds
the Information Society for an entire continent, eTampere builds
the future welfare of Tampere citizens.

Tampere will step into the future, bold and dedicated."

Mr Jarmo Rantanen
Mayor
