eTampere also built a foundation for profitable research cooperation
The universities and research institutions in Tampere create a favourable environment for conducting research related to knowledge society and studies based on this research. Tampere University of Technology has a strong focus on information technology and in its research is engaged in extensive cooperation with Nokia and other companies in the field. In addition to this same theme, research at the University of Tampere delves into the use of IT-based means and the information content relayed through them from the perspectives of data processing, mass communication, information sciences and cultural studies, among others. The region’s universities of applied sciences produce high-standard vocational competence in several fields central to the building of a knowledge society.
Knowledge society related research and education have provided natural opportunities for cooperation between Tampere’s two universities. Collaboration has also increased with companies in the field. However, research and education have been carried out in a decentralized manner in small units. As a cooperative effort between various players, the eTampere programme offered a good opportunity to raise knowledge society research and education to a new level.
